Presentazione candidatura con Italia4Italy
Ciao a tutti,
Hello everyone, I'm Cesare Giulio Ardito, top candidate of Italia4Italy. I am a mathematician and I work at the University of Manchester. 21600 of you will know me as the administrator of the "Italiani a Manchester" group, and others perhaps for having read one of the many articles on www.italianiamanchester.com. I am also a volunteer (Level 1 OISC-registered) for Settled, and every day I help many European citizens with their applications for Pre-Settled or Settled Status.
For more than five years now I have led a large community, whose main purpose is to help themselves each other and encourage networking between Italians. It is undeniable: the Italian community in the UK has been hit hard by the impact of Brexit and the pandemic, and the institutions have not been able to react in a timely manner… but the community has.
I have met many communities led by Italians and Europeans who have reacted to the challenges of Brexit, the pandemic, and the world in general by stepping up to help the weaker members in the community, making their skills and hours and hours of their time available for free, with the spirit of solidarity that has always distinguished the Italian population.
There is a gift that Italy has been giving to its compatriots abroad since 1985, which has no equal in other European countries: it is called Comites. The Comites is a committee of volunteers, elected every 5 years by italian citizens resident in each consular district, which therefore represents the local Italian community and brings its voice to the consular institutions and to the Italian government and parliament. Furthermore, Comites has a budget available to organize events, support local initiatives for the dissemination of Italian language and culture, and provide information. You will be thinking: where was our Comites in all these years? I can't say: I know, however, where it wasn't, and I also know that the question you've been asking me for months when I urge you to register to vote for the Comites is: “Cesare, hold on, what is a Comites?"
With a website, a group, and even in private, I help many Italians every day, and the lowest common denominator I find in the requests I receive is a sense of bewilderment, of abandonment by the institutions. In my opinion, the most important function of Comites is to act as a bridge between a community of Italians abroad, which by its nature are fragmented, and the Consular authorities, and in recent years I have experienced firsthand the consequences of the lack of an active Comites: bewilderment, confusion, sometimes despair of fellow Italians who no longer knew where to turn.
I would like to change all this. Italia4Italy is the answer to this situation from 15 Italians, each one having been active to help the community for many years (in some cases decades). We seek change that leads to an active, efficient Comites that represents the whole Italian community in the United Kingdom. A Comites that cooperates with the thousands of local realities that help Italians every day, and makes them participants and agents of the change we want to bring.
And there is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring this change forth: thanks to the 2019 Brexit Decree, the Italian Consulate in Manchester will soon reopen. This is a unique opportunity for a change of pace, but on the other hand it is even more important that the new Comites is a true mirror of the entire constituency, from Birmingham to Newcastle, from the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea, so that the voice of all the communities can reach the new Consul of Manchester.
In recent years I have done my best to inform and help Italians with the community that I lead and with the website www.italianiamanchester.com. I will continue to do so as long as necessary, regardless of the outcome of these elections. But I know that I could do much, much more as a member of a new, active and capable Comites, and I put myself out there to try to do that.
Change is possible, and there is a unique opportunity to make it happen ... but now the ball is in your court: you must first register to vote for it (by November 3rd), and then choose who you want to represent you voting by correspondence.
