The answer to the question "Why did you put yourself forward?", Often and willingly placed in the most colloquial form "Why would you do that?", is this one. To summarize it briefly: if my aim is to provide correct and digestible information to half a million Italians in the UK, being a member of the Comites allows me to do that better, for three reasons: it gives me an institutional role when talking to institutions; it gives me access to funds for communication projects to reach all Italians; finally, it makes the Comites function properly, and Comites naturally attracts citizens' requests.
This was the personal reason: then, obviously, my candidacy was part of a project with much more general and ambitious objectives, which I still fully support. But, for me, the most important thing remains communication.
After the meeting in February, together with the Comites Communication Commission, which I chair, we discussed guidelines and a framework, and then I started working on the part which was assigned to me. Ultimately, tonight, after months of informal activity (that is, done without having formally approved those, only with an informal okay from the president) we finally approved those guidelines.
So, here’s what I did! First, we have a new logo:
I updated the Facebook page, graphically and by increasing interactions with other institutional pages, or with Italian associations or companies active in the area, and by disseminating initiatives of interest.
I created a new website, replacing the old one which was from 2017 in shape and content. The website, which in some parts is still under construction, in addition to describing the composition and activities of the Comites also aims to be a collection of useful links and information for Italian citizens in England through the Territory and Resources pages. Another promise kept: the site is 100% bilingual, and you can choose between Italian and English using a switch at the top right of each page (or in the menu for those who use the website from mobile).
We have also activated the Helpdesk service, through which every citizen can contact the Comites via Facebook, email or website form. So far, without ever advertising it, we have received about 40 requests for information, all resolved through simple signposting, and some reports of inefficiencies or problems that have been promptly sent to the authorities in question.
There are still some issues: I did all this with zero budget, and therefore any addition that would require even a minimal contribution is currently postponed to the future. It will be necessary to invest in Comites advertising, through campaigns and interactions with associations and groups of Italians in the area: any type of communication, to be effective, must have an audience, and at the moment ours is very small, for reasons that, if you have been following me for a while, you will easily understand.
We will also need to increase the means at our disposal: current communication is largely digital, and as such excludes certain sections of the population. It will be necessary to think of initiatives to involve the press, and a telephone line alongside the Helpdesk service to be sure of being accessible for those who have difficulties using email. It will be necessary to start a dialogue with associations and patronages, to tell them that we are here, ready to listen to their problems and to report them to those in charge. But, as usual, Rome wasn't built in a day. One step at a time.
